Marble is such a beautiful stone, and understandably the surface of choice for high-end bars, hotels, casinos, and homes. But it is porous, spongelike, and very high maintenance.
Marble, like Onyx and Limestone, is calcium based. The acids in lemons, limes, orange juice and soft drinks will quickly suck out that calcium and leave an etching that can only be removed by rehoning. Rust, grease, wax, paint, or mildew will each stain marble in an entirely different way. Some stains are more removeable than others. Most are problemmatic, requiring a poulice soaked with the correct chemical mixture to be applied from 24 to 48 hours. It's incredible, and the amount of information and misinformation about cleaning marble is astounding. Some websites (not mentioning names) actually reccomend commercial rust stain removers, which will further etch marble!
